Childish Things - Multimedia Sculpture

This series deals with the difficulty of being an adult when you have none of the traditional markers of adulthood (marriage, children, homeownership, etc.).  I began by considering children’s dolls.  I’m interested in the performative nature of these toys – the way children will use them to act out possible future roles.  A child bottle-feeding a baby doll, for example, plays at being a parent and nurturer.  I wanted to explore what types of objects could represent or allow enactment of my experiences of early adulthood.  What types of dolls could prepare me to continue this path?  I intended the pieces to include a sense of play and discovery but also elements of frustration and vulnerability.  The head found in all of these sculptures is a cast of my mother:  the quintessential adult.
